15-second typing test
How this 15-second typing test works
Start typing and the clock starts with your first key. Type the words as they appear; space moves to the next word, and backspace fixes mistakes, even in a word you have already left. When the time is up you get your speed, your accuracy, and something no plain typing test gives you: the moves between keys that cost you the most time.
How words per minute are counted
A "word" is five characters, spaces included, the standard every typing test uses, so your number compares with any other test. Only words typed right count toward your speed. Raw speed counts every key you pressed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keys that were the right one.
What slows you down
TypingKit times the gap between every two keys you press. Fluent typing is mostly these transitions: a slow b after r, or the same finger reaching from e to d, holds back
every word that contains it. After each test you see your three most expensive transitions, why they are slow,
and how much faster you would be without them. One click turns them into a one-minute drill of real words.
How to get faster
- Accuracy first. A mistake costs three or four keystrokes to notice and fix. Slow down until errors are rare, and speed follows.
- Keep your eyes on the screen. Looking down at the keys caps how fast you can go.
- A little every day. Five minutes daily beats an hour once a week. Your recent results stay in this browser, so you can watch them move.
- Drill the slow moves. Practicing the transitions that cost you the most improves every word that contains them.
